Showing thirty years of painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation, The museum of contemporary art Los Angeles presents Henry Taylor’s art highlighting the living painter’s experimentation and bold spirit.

Taylor still lives and works in Los Angeles. He was born in California. His observations occupy portraits and the Black American experience in the United States. He embeds the message in the art like in the sculptural installation inspired by the black panther party — mannequins are dressed in leather jackets and pin buttons. There’ s also the painting of dying Philando Castile — a 32 year old black man shot and killed during a traffic stop by a police officer in Minnesota. Castile was driving with his girlfriend and four year daughter.

Henry Taylor, Untitled (2021)

I never seen any of the sculptures like Untitled (2021), which I really liked. In this career retrospective, Taylor is an unstoppable force. Through his evolution as a painter we can see playfulness, community, history, and protest is at the root of beauty. What makes a free Black man? He has survived.
