CHEYENNE JULIEN: PHANTOM GATES AND FALLING HOMES @ CHAPTER NY 2 SEPTEMBER- 11 OCTOBER 2020

Chapter NY presents a new solo show by Cheyenne Julien. This is the first show I traveled to and seen in person since New York City ended its Coronavirus lock down.

Each painting and drawing is a personal moment taking you back to the artist’s observations, memories, and experiences in a city environment. Julien gives the viewer familiar everyday urban scenes and mesmerizing cultural portraits of individuals close to the artist — Master of the house is a portrait of the artist’s father.

I love everything. Julien is making Black American urban experiences visible. In Blackout, seeing the young girl with the red Rocawear logo activates so many feelings for me. The painting is joyful, nostalgic, and fun. The artist is dealing with subjects in their individual state.

Cheyenne Julien was born in the Bronx, NY, received her BFA in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2016 and completed residencies at the Bronxartspace and Skowhegan school of painting and sculpture. She lives in New York.
