James Baldwin, 1967

Michael Rosenfeld Gallery in New York organized a monumental new show of portraits and abstract paintings by forgotten Black American artist, Beauford Delaney. Delaney was a really fascinating man. He suffered and left behind a beautiful legacy. He’s America’s Vincent van Gogh. A real deal tragic hero artist. But unlike Pollock, or Van Gogh, Delaney doesn't have a real masterpiece to make him a well known name to younger generations.

Mother’s Portrait (aka Portrait of Delia Delaney), 1964
Untitled (Light Abstraction), 1970

Black, gay man, born in Knoxville, Tennessee. Delaney moved to New York during the Harlem renaissance without money doing his own thing. He relocated to Paris in 1953, then at age 52 where he died twenty seven years later of alcohol abuse, poverty and madness.
